The Shutdown, the Showdown, and the Urgent Need To Repolarize... For Revolution

Revolution Newspaper | October 9, 2013

Note from Debra Sweet:

In response to your comments on the government shutdown, and prospects for constitutional crisis and recession if the government defaults on its debt:

  1. Yes, this is a serious and extreme situation, which should be of great concern to all.  An organized core of fascists within the Republican Party is using extortion, a forceful reassertion of traditional "American" values and vicious, racist hatred of Obama towards its immediate goal of stopping any health care reform, and its larger goal of a government which has no organized responsibility for the welfare of the people.
  2. No, the Democrats in their constant conciliation, in the service of empire, to the hard-core fascists, are not the answer.  They may likely cut a deal that limits Medicare and Medigap or other critical social programs, or give more tax concessions to the wealthiest. Whatever the Democrats concede will accept these lunatics - who won't stop fighting for their goal - as a legitimate part of the political spectrum, and set the stage for further a potentially bigger showdown.
  3. There are very few analysts or activists digging deeply enough into what is going on.  The article The Shutdown, the Showdown, and the Urgent Need To Repolarize... For Revolution is unique in doing so, and well worth studying.

Thanks to those of you responding to me this week.  We would like to hear much more about what you're thinking, including in response to this article, and what those around you have to say regarding the government shutdown.  Write me.

The government shutdown dominates the news. Republicans and Democrats fight in a stalemate, unable to agree. There is talk, including by mainstream commentators, that “our democracy is imperiled.” (See Thomas Friedman’s op-ed, “Our Democracy Is at Stake,” in the October 1 New York Times.) Each night witnesses a parade of extreme right-wing demagogues dominating the cable news shows, influencing the thinking of millions, and rallying people to their side.

What is going on? Is the situation as serious as some say? Why? Who are these Republicans? Are they just lunatics, fools, and racists—or are they actually proceeding with a strategy and a goal in mind? And what about the Democrats—are they “finally standing up for reason”? Why do these disagreements seem so bitter—is it for real, is it for short-term advantage, or is it just fakery altogether? What is really being fought over—is it only about health care? What stakes, if any, do the masses of people—in the U.S. but, more important, all around the world—have in this conflict? And what challenge does this pose to those who really want to see a better world?
