February 4 International Day of Action: NO U.S. War on Iran

78 locations Begin New Antiwar Movement Against Sanctions, Attack on Iran

When:  Saturday, February 4, 2012 see locations here and here

New York, NY: Sixty peace and civil rights groups will gather in almost 80 cities, primarily in the U.S. and Canada tomorrow to oppose moves by the Obama administration and the Netanyahu government to wage war on Iran.

A statement by the February 4 coalition, whose demands are, “No war, no sanctions, no intervention, no assassinations,” says, “The U.S. has authorized harsh economic sanctions that could literally destroy and devastate the lives of millions of Iranian civilians. In addition to the sanctions, there have been targeted assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists and a U.S. surveillance drone was discovered in violation of Iranian sovereignty and airspace.”

In New York City, demonstrators will rally at Duffy Square, 47th & Broadway at the north end of Times Square, and march across town to the US Mission to the United Nations, and the Israeli Consulate. Large groups will gather across from The White House, in large cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, and several Canadian cities, Leeds U.K., and in many smaller towns such as Blacksburg VA and Truckee, CA.

“This coalition sponsoring this day of mass action has come together more quickly, and a wider basis, than the movement against the US war on Iraq. We are determined to prevent the US from beginning another disastrous way in the Middle East,” said Elaine Brower, whose son was a US Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“We know from years of opposition protests that most Iranian people distrust their government, with its stolen election, prisons filled with political activists, and growing poverty.  But the actions of the Iranian government in no way justify a US war on Iran, which would not help the Iranian people, and would be strongly against the interests of people living in this country,” says Debra Sweet, Director of World Can’t Wait.

Organizers expect thousands to turn out across the U.S. in the first organized protests of possible U.S. war on Iran.
