Journalist Expert on U.S. Prison in Guantanamo Speaks on 11th Anniversary of Illegal Prison

Veterans, Occupiers and War Opponents Protest US Wars for Empire and Demand Release of Pfc. Manning at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte

Today, outside of the Democratic National Convention, protesters will gather in support of the soldier accused of leaking classified records to WikiLeaks, Pfc Manning.   They will demand that the Army drops charges against Manning, on the basis that the leaks provided essential information to the public about the effect of the "global war on terror," most notably the Collateral Murder incident where Iraqi civilians were killed.  Protesters insist that all the wars the US is engaged in, both covert and conventional, end immediately.

As the Obama administration expresses fury at Pakistani resistance to further NATO war operations and excludes Pakistan's president from the NATO Summit, members of the wider community will gather to memorialize people killed by U.S. airstrikes and drone attacks in Pakistan as well as in the U.S. occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as U.S./NATO operations in Yemen, Libya, and elsewhere.  Recognizing what veterans on Sunday called "the burden of blood that has stained these medals", Trinity Church has opened its lawn to expressions of grief and remembrance by the entire community.

Debra Sweet, Executive Director, World Can’t Wait, To Receive 2012 American Humanist Award as “Heroine”

Debra Sweet, World Can’t Wait Director, will receive the 2012 American Humanist Association’s (AHA) Humanist Heroine Award. The award will be presented at the AHA national conference on June 9 in New Orleans and is a joint presentation of the AHA and its Feminist Caucus. Since 1982, this award is given annually to women who promote and advance the ideals of human rights and gender justice using a non-theological approach. Past awardees have included Judy Norsigian, Robin Morgan, Julia Sweeney and Amy Goodman.

New York NY – On Monday, April 30, 20 protesters will stand trial on disorderly conduct charges in the first mass trial of Occupy Wall Street-related arrests stemming from an October 21, 2011 non-violent civil disobedience protest of “stop and frisk” policy at the NYPD 28th Precinct in Harlem.
