Medical License of Dr. Tiller's Colleague Ordered Revoked

by Kari Ann Rinker

The Operation Rescue dance on Dr. Tiller’s grave continues in Kansas.  This time in the form of a celebratory jig performed in their perceived triumph over an administrative judge’s ruling issuing an order of revocation of the license of Dr. Ann Kristen Neuhaus.

Dr. Neuhaus was the second opinion physician for Dr. George Tiller’s practice in Wichita.  From the AP…

In an order that became public Tuesday, the judge said Dr. Ann Kristen Neuhaus failed to meet accepted standards of care in performing exams on 11 patients, ages 10 to 18, who had late-term abortions at Tiller's clinic in Wichita from July to November 2003. The judge said Neuhaus' records did not contain the information necessary to show she did thorough exams.

The State Board of Healing Arts will make the final determination regarding Dr. Neuhaus’ license at their next meeting scheduled in April.

March 10: Celebrate Abortion Providers

Thank an abortion provider

With the escalating vicious nationwide attack on the right to abortion and even birth control going on, this National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers takes on new profound importance. All of us who are outraged by this endless onslaught on the reproductive choice need to take that all that righteous outrage and focus it for the next two weeks into making sure March 10th, National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers is a big celebration of abortion and the precious doctors who make this right available!

In 1996, March 10th was declared a National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers by a group of national organizations and individuals as a way of giving back to the people who risk so much to ensure women have access to abortion.

State-Sanctioned Rape: Trans-Vaginal Ultrasound Laws in Virginia, Texas, and Iowa

 by Andy Kopsa

Virginia is poised to send two of the most abhorrent anti-choice bills to Governor Bob McDonnell to sign. The governor, eyes trained on a vice presidential bid, has indicated he will sign at least one if not both of the bills.

The first is a bill requiring the use of trans-vaginal ultrasound prior to a woman obtaining an abortion, the other is an egg-as-person bill.  Like other failed "personhood" bills, the Virginia provision would outlaw not only abortion but also forms of hormonal birth control.

Although the Governor has said he will consider the personhood bill he has been clear he would sign the forced ultrasound bill.  But let's start calling this what it really is: state sanctioned rape.

The Sound of Silence: Where Is the Anti-Choice Outcry Over North Carolina's Forced Sterilization of Women of Color?

by Pamela Merritt

A task force in North Carolina recently ruled that survivors of that state’s eugenics program should be paid $50,000 each in financial compensation. Eugenics is often defined as the science of “improving” a human population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of “desirable” heritable characteristics.

The practice of eugenics was not limited to Nazi Germany nor is it a well kept secret that’s been waiting to be discovered by organizations opposed to reproductive justice.

In America, state governments set up eugenics boards that determined the reproductive future of thousands. I grew up listening to my maternal Grandmother, a Mississippi native, warn against trusting doctors and passing along lessons she learned from other poor women of color who went into a hospital to give birth only to later find out that they were given a Mississippi Appendectomy without their consent.

Report from DC on Roe v. Wade Anniversary: Taking on the “March for Forced Motherhood!”

by Sunsara Taylor

I arrived in DC yesterday midday with an impressive group of mostly young women. Some of them I have known for a while, both through the movement for revolution and through the more recent efforts initiating a new movement to End Pornography and Patriarchy: the Enslavement and Degradation of Women.

One was a young woman who I had just met the day before up at a clinic in the South Bronx where there was a march commemorating Roe v. Wade that made its way to a fake clinic (a “Crisis Pregnancy Center”) where there was a speak-out against the lies and guilt and lack of medical help that is distributed at those centers.

A Call to Atheists and Secularists to Defend Women's Right to Abortion and Birth Control

Atheists and secularists generally pride themselves on respect for science, opposition to harmful religious myths, and a fierce defense of the separation of church and state.  Yet there is a critical need for atheists and secularists of conscience to collectively challenge the current moral, cultural, and political siege upon women’s right to self-determination. Flowing from each of these principles, we call on atheists and secularists to make public their support for women's right to abortion and birth control. Due to the insidious climate of anti-abortion propaganda and legislation these basic rights are being viciously imperiled.

If They Called It the “March for Forced Motherhood and Female Enslavement,” Then Would You Protest?

By Sunsara Taylor

We are fast approaching the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion. Shamefully, each year, this anniversary is not marked by a massive celebration that women no longer die by the thousands in the back-alleys; not a celebration that women no longer are forced to foreclose their lives and dreams because of unwanted pregnancies; not a celebration of the doctors who risk their lives every day to provide abortions.

Instead, this anniversary is marked by an outpouring that hates all of those extremely liberating things. This outpouring calls itself the “March for Life,” but a look at their stated principles reveals an agenda of female enslavement. The following is taken from the statement on their website, "Applying the Life Principles”:

Abortion Clinic Burned on New Year's Morning—Into the Streets for Abortion Rights on Anniversary of Roe v. Wade!

On January 1st, by 1:00 in the morning, an abortion clinic in Pensacola, Florida was engulfed in flames. By all accounts thus far, this was a case of arson.

But chances are you have heard nothing about this.

The fact that there has not been a single politician commenting on this violent assault on an institution that is essential to women's freedom and that this act of terror has not been picked up on in the national/mainstream media should only serve as a further wake-up call to those who care about women's rights.

Reproductive Justice Banners Fly in San Francisco

By Ellen

For the first time in San Francisco history, banners advocating reproductive rights and justice began flying on Market Street, one of the city's main thoroughfares.

The display was organized bty the Silver Ribbon Campaign to Trust Women, a coalition of 42 national and local organizations that aims to build the momentum and solidarity of the pro-choice majority. During 2011, Congress and state legislatures proposed or enacted an unprecedented number of attacks on women's reproductive health care services, including birth control as well as abortion, while slashing basic health services.
